Mike Wesch: Anthropological Introduction to YouTube

Notes:
  • YouTube was launched on the 23rd of April 2005
  • Web 2.0 is about linking people
  • User-generated filtering, organisation and commentary.  *User-generated content - is defined as any form of content (blogs, vlogs, tweets, posts, chats etc) created by users from an online system or service. Often made available on via social media networks.
  • Anonymity - The condition of being anonymous.
  • Ephemeral - lasting for a very short time.
  • Anonymity + physical distance + rare and ephemeral dialogue = hatred as public performance
  • Anonymity + physical distance + rare and ephemeral dialogue = freedom to experience humanity without fear or anxiety.
  • Aesthetic arrest - YouTube allows you to watch someone without staring at them and making them feel uncomfortable as they can't see you watching them.
  • Cultural Inversion
Express:- individualism, independence, commercialization
Value:- community, relationships, authenticity
  • Connection = constraint
  • Connection without constraint = people connecting deeply without guilt.
  • Sometimes that distance allows us to connect more deeply than ever before.
  • New forms of community create new forms of self understanding.
  • Everyone is an independent producer
  • Producing ourselves - re taking identity, editing our own histories, playing with identity
  • gaming and exposing the internet (e.g. icon pictures/thumbnails)
  • seriously playful participatory media culture
